Nominal and Verbal Semantic Structure: Analogies and Interactions
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines parallels in semantic structure between noun phrases and verbal predicates in constructions in which they are mutually constraining and contribute to the expression of LEXICAL ASPECT and GRAMMATICAL ASPECT. One of the main claims pursued here is that such interactions are semantically motivated: it is the nominal argument linked to the Incremental Theme role that interacts with the aspectual semantics of verbal predicates and sentences, at least in the most typical cases. I will show how such interactions, which appear to be procedural and directional, can be described declaratively within a constraint-based (or unificationbased) framework. This area intersects with lexical semantics, morphology and i t poses intriguing problems to the mapping between syntax and semantics. It also provides an excellent basis for cross-linguistic studies and for exploring how nouns and verbs relate to the ontology of individuals and eventualities. The data is mainly drawn from English and Slavic languages, which are compared to German and Finnish.

Semantic Distance Modulates the N400 Event-Related Potential in Verbal Analogical Reasoning
Computational accounts have traditionally focused on mapping between structured representations as fundamental to analogical processing. However, a recent connectionist model has been used to argue that structured representations may not be necessary to solve verbal analogies. Green and colleagues (2010) have shown that brain areas associated with analogical mapping become more engaged as seman...
متن کاملTowards constructing an Integrative, Multi-Level Model for Cognition: The Function of Semantic Networks
Integrated approaches try to connect different constructs in different theories and reinterpret them using a common conceptual framework. In this research, using the concept of processing levels, an integrated, three-level model of the cognitive systems has been proposed and evaluated. Processing levels are divided into three categories of Feature-Oriented, Semantic and Conceptual Level based o...
متن کاملThe Effect of Semantic and Relational Similarity on the N400 Event-Related Potential in Verbal Analogical Reasoning
Previous neuroimaging studies (e.g., Green et al., 2010; Kmiecik & Morrison, 2013) suggest the neurocognitive processes responsible for verbal analogical reasoning vary with the semantic distance between source and target. In order to further investigate how semantic and relational similarity interacts during reasoning, we presented the A-, B-, C-, and D-terms of verbal analogies sequentially w...
متن کاملThe Language of Everyday Verbal Analogies
Verbal analogies produced during naturally occurring instructional discourse in mathematics were explored using techniques borrowed from studies of language in use (see Wortham & Rymes, 2003). Close examination of two eighth-grade instructional analogies reveals that the language practices of analogy are instrumental in shaping recipients’ relational re-representation of objects being compared,...
متن کاملImproving Nominal SRL in Chinese Language with Verbal SRL Information and Automatic Predicate Recognition
This paper explores Chinese semantic role labeling (SRL) for nominal predicates. Besides those widely used features in verbal SRL, various nominal SRL-specific features are first included. Then, we improve the performance of nominal SRL by integrating useful features derived from a state-of-the-art verbal SRL system. Finally, we address the issue of automatic predicate recognition, which is ess...
